Malcolm Hordern
SAVA Qualified with 15 years experience in Building Surveying, Property inspections and Home buyers surveys.
Our Story
After spending many years working in the commercial refurbishment sector, Malcolm decided to follow his passion for buildings and fuel his curiosity about how they are constructed and designed, by re-training to become a surveyor. Having always enjoyed constructing houses out of Lego as a child, Malcolm started Property Inspections NW 15 years ago. He has subsequently accrued a wealth of knowledge and experience and continues to develop his skills.
In 2020, following high demand for his services, Malcolm decided to expand the business, opening up Property Inspections as a franchise. This is because he believes whole-heartedly that every home buyer, whether purchasing their first home, moving up the property ladder, buying their forever home or starting or adding to a property portfolio, should be provided with the right knowledge and information to ensure they can make a confident purchase. Malcolm wished to widen the areas he covered, ensuring more clients could benefit from his services. He is passionate about trying to reduce the stress for home buyers by supporting them in their purchase with a Property Inspections survey and report.
When not working on the business, Malcolm loves a good book, he’s not fussy over genres, quiz shows and taking well-earned holidays. He also loves spending time with his family, especially his 3-year-old grandson who likes to play cars with him and drag him round the garden hunting for strawberries.
Our family business
As a family run business, Malcolm is supported by his wife Susan who runs the administrative side of things. His son-in law, Simon Brown, was the first franchisee and continues to work as a surveyor for Property Inspections. Malcolm’s other son-in-Law, Robert Hirst, is currently training as a surveyor and will join the business next year. He also looks after the website and all things technical. Malcolm’s two daughters, Rebecca and Michelle, help with administration and marketing when necessary and even his 3-year-old grandson likes to be involved, usually by ‘playing’ with his Daddy’s (Simon’s) surveying equipment.
Our Personal Service
We take the utmost professional pride in every survey we undertake. Unlike many other surveying firms, we believe we offer a more bespoke service as our surveyors typically only carry-out one survey per day. We consider this to be what makes us unique as it allows our surveyors to spend more time at the property, ensuring we carry out a thorough survey, within the remit of our regulations.
This means that we can provide a more personalised service and our surveyors are available to speak with clients personally about their survey reports. We can also offer guidance on remediation and information about consulting builders and other trades people.
Our Surveyors
As a family business, we pride ourselves in treating all our surveyors as part of the family. Not only do they benefit from personal one-to-one mentoring from Malcolm but through regular contact, they are also able to share their knowledge, skills and experience with each other.
Our surveyors also take part in regular industry training according to need and have access to continuing professional development. This allows our surveyors to gain the benefits that being part of a larger organisation might bring but offers them the flexibility of being self-employed, free to choose their own working hours and manage their work-life balance. We think that this is the best of both worlds and supporting our surveyor’s mental health and well-being so that Property Inspections and our surveyors, can offer you the best possible service.
